You open Instagram to answer a message. Reels starts playing. Twenty minutes disappear. Blocking the app works better when the rule matches the part of Instagram that keeps pulling you back.
An iPhone can cap your daily use, block Instagram during set hours, or stop you from reinstalling it. Aura adds another choice: Instagram stays locked until you earn time by completing a healthy habit.
Set a daily Instagram limit
Apple's App Limits are useful when you want a fixed amount of Instagram each day. The limit covers the whole app, including direct messages, Stories, and Reels.
- 1
Open Settings and tap Screen Time.
- 2
Turn on App & Website Activity if Screen Time is not already active.
- 3
Tap App Limits, then Add Limit.
- 4
Open Social and select Instagram.
- 5
Choose a daily allowance. Tap Customize Days if you want different limits on weekends.
- 6
Tap Add.
Block Instagram during specific hours
Use Downtime when Instagram is mostly a morning, work, or bedtime problem. Apps outside your Always Allowed list are unavailable during the schedule you choose.
- 1
Go to Settings, Screen Time, then Downtime.
- 2
Turn on Scheduled and choose the days and hours you want protected.
- 3
Turn on Block at Downtime.
- 4
Open Always Allowed and confirm Instagram is not on the allowed list.
- 5
Keep calls, messages, maps, and any other essential apps available.
Delete Instagram and prevent a quick reinstall
Deleting Instagram does not delete your account. If reinstalling it is the usual workaround, Screen Time can temporarily prevent new app downloads. This setting applies to every app, so use it for a short reset rather than as a casual daily rule.
- 1
Delete Instagram from your iPhone.
- 2
Open Settings, Screen Time, then Content & Privacy Restrictions.
- 3
Turn on Content & Privacy Restrictions.
- 4
Tap iTunes & App Store Purchases.
- 5
Set Installing Apps to Don't Allow.
Close the instagram.com workaround
Removing the app leaves instagram.com available in Safari. If that becomes the new route to Reels, add the website to Screen Time's Never Allow list under Web Content. This also affects links that open Instagram in a browser.
- 1
Open Settings, Screen Time, then Content & Privacy Restrictions.
- 2
Tap App Store, Media, Web & Games, then Web Content.
- 3
Choose Limit Adult Websites.
- 4
Under Never Allow, add instagram.com.
Earn Instagram time with Aura
Aura blocks Instagram before the feed opens. Complete a habit, collect Aura coins, and spend only the minutes you want. One coin buys one minute of screen time.
This works well when a warning is too easy to dismiss but deleting Instagram feels unnecessary. You can still answer messages or watch Reels after earning access; the automatic check is what changes.
- Select Instagram as a blocked app.
- Choose a habit that fits your day.
- Complete it and collect your coins.
- Spend the minutes, then let Instagram lock again.
Choose the rule you will keep
Use an App Limit for a simple daily cap. Use Downtime when the problem happens at predictable hours. Block reinstalling or the website when you need a firmer reset. Use Aura when you want healthy habits to decide how much Instagram time is available.
Start with the lightest rule that changes your behavior. A limit you keep is more useful than a strict setup you remove the next morning.
Common questions
Can I block Instagram without blocking DMs?
Apple's Screen Time limits apply to the whole Instagram app, including direct messages. Keep another contact method available or use a short Aura session when you need to reply.
Why can I still tap Ignore Limit?
A standard Screen Time limit can be extended. A Screen Time passcode controlled by someone you trust adds friction. Aura uses a different rule by requiring earned minutes before Instagram opens.
Does deleting Instagram delete my account?
No. Removing the Instagram app from your iPhone does not delete your account, posts, messages, or followers.
Can I block Instagram in Safari too?
Yes. Add instagram.com to Screen Time's Never Allow list under Web Content. Remember that this blocks Instagram links in every browser on the device.
Apple changes Screen Time labels from time to time. If a menu looks different on your iPhone, see Apple's current Screen Time guide and content restriction guide.
